The Lion of St Mark

RESPONSE: Mark, chapters 1-3

PETER'S MOTHER IN LAW

BRIEF COMMENTS

Mark names the four disciples present.

Jesus raises her up - the same word as is used for the resurrection.

he served them - an indication of service within the Christian community.

Note that Mark twice uses the word "straightaway". This is one of Mark's favourite words, but it is not always translated.

(Mark's other favourite word is "and". It is used so frequently that many are ommitted in translations).

Matthew's account is shorter and stresses "Him" (Jesus) not "them". The disciples are not even mentioned.

Luke does not name the disciples but does speak of "them".

For Luke, the fever is rebuked. This suggests an exorcism.
