The bull of St Luke

The Gospel of Luke

Luke and Acts

Comparing the two references Lk 23,46 and Acts 7,59 gives us a good simple example of the links between the Gospel and Acts.

The last words of Jesus on the cross recorded by Luke in Lk 23,46 are "Father, into your hands I commend my Spirit". This is a quotation from psalm 31,6. This cry of Jesus is unique to Luke; the other Gospels giving different last words from Jesus. In due course we will explore this further.
The point for our present comparison is that St Stephen, the first martyr, dies using the same words as Jesus (Acts 7,39). From this, We can see how St Luke has modelled his account of the death of Stephen in Acts by recalling his account of the Passion of the Lord in the Gospel.
